2024-11-22
Karin Ptaszek-Kochis from Denmark once achieved remarkable success in women’s singles during her professional tennis career. Now, at the age of 52, she has emerged as a top-ranked player in the women’s senior charts of pickleball and is all set to represent her homeland at the inaugural DUPR European Pickleball Championships.

Discovering a New Passion

When Karin Ptaszek-Kochis was playing tennis in Florida, she came across pickleball and initially had no interest in playing it. However, with her competitive nature, she soon found herself drawn to this sport. She taught people pickleball but didn't realize its potential until she gave it a try herself. "I think this is the most social sport I have played. So many people can participate, and different levels can mix easily. But it is also highly competitive, which I love. It ticks all the boxes for me," she said.

The Appeal of Pickleball

Pickleball offers a unique combination of social interaction and competitive spirit. It allows players of all ages and skill levels to come together and enjoy the game. Karin Ptaszek-Kochis emphasizes its social aspect, stating, "You meet so many wonderful people on the pickleball court. It's a great way to make friends and connect with others who share the same love for the sport."

Building a Successful Career

Ptaszek-Kochis moved to the US to pursue a tennis career at college and has since built a strong reputation. She has won eight singles events this year, including the prestigious US Open. Her achievements in pickleball have also been remarkable. She is currently the top-ranked women’s senior player on the APP and has won medals in various competitions. "2024 has been an exceptional year for me. Winning eight APP events and the US Open has been a dream come true," she said.

Representing Denmark

Despite spending more than half her life away from Denmark, Karin Ptaszek-Kochis is proud to represent her homeland. She has played for Denmark in the Fed Cup as a tennis player and is now looking forward to competing in the team championship at the European Pickleball Championships. "Even though I haven't lived in Denmark for a while, I still feel a strong connection. It's amazing to be competing at this level again in a new sport," she added. To learn more about the European Pickleball Championships, visit www.europeanpickleballfederation.org.
