Kentucky Derby Contenders Hit the Track: Three Horses Make Noteworthy Moves
2025-03-10

Three prominent contenders for the Kentucky Derby made significant strides on Monday, showcasing their readiness for the upcoming competition. Barnes, a Grade 2 winner trained by Bob Baffert, returned to work after placing second in the San Felipe Stakes. Meanwhile, East Avenue and Poster, both graded-stakes victors, also completed workouts at different tracks. These exercises provide valuable insights into the horses' preparations and current form as they aim for the prestigious event.

Barnes, a promising colt sired by Into Mischief, resumed training with a four-furlong workout that clocked in at 50.6 seconds at Santa Anita. This was his first exercise since finishing runner-up in the San Felipe Stakes on March 1. Despite dropping from being the favorite in Las Vegas betting, Barnes remains a notable contender, currently listed at 12-1 odds. The horse's performance under trainer Bob Baffert continues to be closely watched by racing enthusiasts.

East Avenue, a standout performer with a Grade 1 victory to his name, demonstrated impressive speed during a five-furlong workout at Fair Grounds. Covering the distance in 59.2 seconds, he posted the fastest time among seven horses at that length. Trainer Brendan Walsh's charge had previously finished tenth in the Risen Star Stakes. Despite this setback, East Avenue's latest effort suggests he is regaining momentum ahead of the Derby.

Poster, another Grade 2 winner, turned heads with a six-furlong run at Turfway Park, completing the course in an impressive 1:15.2. This was the fastest time for two horses working at that distance. Trained by Eoin Harty, Poster has been steadily improving, most recently placing third in the Sam F. Davis Stakes. His consistent performances indicate that he could be a dark horse in the upcoming race.

The workouts conducted by these three horses offer a glimpse into their preparation for the Kentucky Derby. Each contender has shown promise, with Barnes maintaining a strong position in betting lines, East Avenue bouncing back from a recent disappointment, and Poster continuing to impress with his speed. As the race approaches, fans and analysts will be closely monitoring these and other top prospects.
