Kentucky Derby Contenders: Tappan Street and Sovereignty Prepare for Glory
2025-04-11

As the anticipation builds for the Kentucky Derby on May 3, two standout contenders, Tappan Street and Sovereignty, are making strides in their preparations. Both horses demonstrated impressive performances in the Grade 1 Florida Derby, with Tappan Street taking first place by a margin of 1 1/4 lengths over Sovereignty. On Friday morning at Payson Park, both horses breezed impressively under the watchful eyes of their trainers. Tappan Street's trainer, Brad Cox, expressed satisfaction with his horse's half-mile breeze, while Bill Mott, overseeing Sovereignty, noted that despite not being a great workhorse, the colt performed admirably. With inclement weather concerns in Kentucky, Tappan Street remains at Payson Park, and plans for Sovereignty’s shipment to Churchill Downs are tentative.

Tappan Street, who has shown remarkable consistency since his debut victory, breezed a half-mile alongside stablemate Rapture under Cox's supervision. According to Cox, the move was executed flawlessly, showcasing Tappan Street's potential as a top contender. The trainer emphasized the colt's mental sharpness, noting his ability to handle all demands placed upon him. "He’s a smart horse, and he’s a good gate horse," Cox remarked, highlighting the importance of a strong start in the Kentucky Derby.

Sovereignty, meanwhile, continues to progress under Mott's guidance. Despite initial challenges this year, including a fever that disrupted early race plans, the colt captured the Fountain of Youth (G2) before finishing second in the Florida Derby. Mott acknowledged Sovereignty's suitability for the 1 1/4-mile distance but admitted concerns about his deep-closing style potentially working against him. Nevertheless, the trainer remains confident in Sovereignty's abilities and is considering shipping him to Churchill Downs based on weather conditions.

Meanwhile, Neoequos, who finished third in the Curlin Florida Derby, is also in contention for the American Turf (G1). Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. described the colt's recent half-mile breeze as a maintenance work, leaving options open for his next race. Joseph plans to evaluate Neoequos further after a turf workout next week before finalizing any decisions.

With just weeks to go until the Kentucky Derby, all eyes remain on these promising thoroughbreds as they prepare for what could be defining moments in their careers. Trainers and owners alike are cautiously optimistic, balancing rigorous training schedules with careful consideration of external factors like weather. As the nation looks forward to this iconic event, the stage is set for an unforgettable showdown among some of the finest young talents in horse racing today.
