2025-01-11

Several promising three-year-olds put on impressive displays during workouts across the country on Saturday, with notable performances from Bob Baffert's stable and other top contenders. Among the highlights were Gaming and Citizen Bull at Santa Anita, both of whom are garnering attention in Kentucky Derby futures betting. Gaming, who placed third in the Grade 2 Los Alamitos Futurity, clocked an impressive five furlongs in 58.6 seconds, while Citizen Bull, a two-time Grade 1 winner, covered the same distance in 1:00.6. The horses' performances have impacted their odds in Las Vegas, where Citizen Bull has seen his odds shift to 28-1. Other horses like Dominant Spirit, Giocoso, and Optical also had significant workouts, reflecting the competitive nature of the upcoming derby season.

Trainer Bob Baffert showcased two of his most promising prospects on Saturday morning at Santa Anita Park. Gaming, known for his recent third-place finish in the Grade 2 Los Alamitos Futurity, demonstrated remarkable speed by completing five furlongs in just 58.6 seconds, marking the fastest time among 32 horses over that distance. This performance comes after Gaming's previous workout eight days ago, also at Santa Anita. Meanwhile, Citizen Bull, a two-time Grade 1 winner, including victories in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and American Pharoah, clocked a solid 1:00.6 over five furlongs. His last start was a win in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, covering 1 1/16 miles on the main track at Del Mar on November 1st. Both horses have been making waves in the Kentucky Derby futures market, with Citizen Bull's odds rising to 28-1 in Las Vegas.

Elsewhere, Dominant Spirit, trained by Bret Calhoun, turned heads at Sam Houston Racetrack with a four-furlong run in 51.0 seconds. This time, though not the fastest, still places him competitively among his peers. Dominant Spirit's last race saw him place third in the Remington Springboard Mile on December 13th. Over at Fair Grounds, Giocoso, under the guidance of Keith Desormeaux, completed four furlongs in 50.6 seconds, showcasing steady progress since his allowance race victory at Churchill Downs on November 8th. Jolly Samurai, another contender, recorded a five-furlong time of 1:02.6 at Sam Houston, reflecting consistent improvement since his fifth-place finish in the Remington Springboard Mile.

The workouts continued across various tracks, with Keep It Easy delivering a strong performance at Gulfstream Park, covering four furlongs in 48.2 seconds. Trainer Dale Romans noted this as a positive sign following Keep It Easy's win in the Ed Brown at Churchill Downs on November 30th. Optical, also trained by Desormeaux, impressed at Fair Grounds with a five-furlong run in 59.6 seconds, the fastest of 25 horses over that distance. Render Judgment, under Kenny McPeek, posted a time of 1:01.4 over five furlongs, maintaining momentum after placing third in the Gun Runner Stakes on December 21st. Sacrosanct, trained by Brad Cox, clocked four furlongs in 49.2 seconds at Belmont Park, showing resilience after winning the New York Stallion Series on December 14th.

Saturday’s workouts concluded with standout performances from San Saba, Tux, and Uncle Jim. San Saba, another of Baffert's charges, clocked five furlongs in 58.8 seconds, the second-fastest time among 32 horses at Santa Anita. Tux, trained by Bill Mott, covered four furlongs in 48.8 seconds at Payson Park, reflecting steady progress since his third-place finish in the Remsen Stakes. Lastly, Uncle Jim, also trained by Cox, ran four furlongs in 49.4 seconds at Belmont Park, demonstrating consistency since his third-place finish in an allowance race at Aqueduct on December 6th. Friday's standout was Vassimo, who logged a fast four-furlong time of 48.8 seconds at Palm Beach Downs, continuing his upward trajectory since winning a maiden race at Gulfstream Park on December 14th.

These workouts provide valuable insights into the form and potential of these young thoroughbreds as they prepare for the highly anticipated Kentucky Derby. With several horses showing significant improvements in their times and positioning in the futures market, trainers and fans alike are closely monitoring these developments. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining which horses can maintain this level of performance leading up to the big day.
