Laurel River to Skip 2024 Dubai World Cup
2025-03-19

The champion racehorse Laurel River, who triumphed in last year's prestigious Group 1 Dubai World Cup, will not be participating in this year's event. According to a post by the Dubai Racing Club, trainer Bhupat Seemar stated that despite the horse's excellent condition, there simply isn't enough time to prepare him adequately for such a high-caliber race. Owner-breeder Juddmonte has opted to grant the 7-year-old stallion additional time, with plans for him to compete in the Saudi Cup (G1) and the Dubai World Cup in 2026.

Bhupat Seemar shared insights into the decision-making process behind skipping this year's Dubai World Cup. Laurel River had shown promising form but encountered a minor setback during training earlier this year, which also caused him to miss the Saudi Cup. The renowned racehorse was initially trained by Bob Baffert from his debut as a two-year-old through his four-year-old campaign. During this period, he achieved remarkable success, winning four of seven races in California, including the prestigious 2022 Pat O'Brien (G2).

In 2023, Laurel River transitioned to Seemar's stable in Dubai. His performance last year included a seventh-place finish in the Al Shindagha Sprint (G3) at Meydan. However, he soon redeemed himself by claiming victory in the Burj Nahaar (G3) and subsequently dominating the $12 million Dubai World Cup with an impressive 8 1/2-length win. More recently, in January, he placed second by a head in the Firebreak (G3) at Meydan.

Looking ahead, racing enthusiasts eagerly anticipate Laurel River's return in future competitions, particularly the Saudi Cup and the 2026 Dubai World Cup. With careful planning and adequate preparation, the hope is that this exceptional athlete will once again shine on the global stage, showcasing his unmatched talent and resilience.
