2025-01-16

In a poignant turn of events, longtime Swampscott baseball coach Frank DeFelice passed away on Tuesday morning at Salem Hospital at the age of 84. Just three months after the passing of his brother and fellow legendary coach Bob, Frank's death marks the end of an era for the baseball community. With a career spanning over three decades, Frank left an indelible mark on both players and fans alike.

A Lifetime Devoted to Sports and Mentorship

Frank DeFelice dedicated 35 years of his life to coaching baseball at Swampscott High School, from 1966 to 1971 and again from 1977 to 2005. During this time, he led his teams to numerous victories, including a state championship in 1993, three North titles, and eight Northeastern Conference crowns. His impressive career record stands at 465 wins and 257 losses. Beyond baseball, Frank also coached football at Xaverian from 1972 to 1976 and Big Blue from 1977 to 1981.

Born and raised in Winthrop, Frank was a three-year starter in both football and baseball at Boston College. After graduating, he served as an assistant football coach at BC before moving on to become an assistant baseball coach at Endicott for 18 seasons. In recognition of his contributions, Frank was inducted into the Massachusetts Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame alongside his brother Bob.

In April of this year, the baseball field at Swampscott High was officially named "Frank DeFelice Diamond" in honor of his outstanding legacy. Former players and colleagues have fondly remembered him for his storytelling prowess, sincere mentorship, and unwavering dedication to his family and players.

Frank is survived by his wife Susan of 56 years, three children, and six grandchildren. A wake will be held on Monday at Solimine Funeral Home in Lynn, followed by a funeral Mass on Tuesday at St. John the Evangelist Church in Swampscott.

Brother Bob, who coached baseball at Bentley for 54 years, retired in 2022 and passed away in October at the age of 82.

A Legacy That Transcends Sport

The passing of Frank DeFelice serves as a reminder of the profound impact that coaches can have on their players' lives. More than just teaching the game, Frank instilled valuable life lessons in his athletes, shaping them into well-rounded individuals. His ability to balance toughness with fairness made him not only a respected coach but also a beloved mentor.

As we reflect on Frank's life and career, it becomes clear that his legacy extends far beyond the diamond. He leaves behind a generation of players who carry forward his teachings and values, ensuring that his spirit continues to inspire future generations of athletes and leaders.
