Jane Mindlin Schosberg, a beloved figure in New York's racing and breeding community, passed away peacefully at the age of 85, surrounded by her family. Preceded in death by her husband Paul and daughter Jill, she leaves behind a rich legacy of dedication to horse racing and breeding. Her contributions to the sport spanned decades, marked by her involvement in various breeding projects and her deep connection with the equine world.
Schosberg’s life was intricately tied to horses from an early age. She began her journey in Virginia, where her family established their initial farming operations. Over the years, she expanded her influence through Pine Lane Farm in Katonah, New York, which became the hub for her breeding endeavors. Among her notable achievements were the production of several successful racehorses, including Cyanea, Mellow Roll, and Lotus Delight, each contributing significantly to the New York-bred champions’ list.
Jane Schosberg grew up in Scarsdale, New York, where she met her lifelong companion, Paul Schosberg, during high school. Following her education at Bennington College, they married in 1959, marking the beginning of a family deeply intertwined with the equestrian world. Their children, Jill and Richard, further enriched this legacy, participating actively in riding and stable management.
Jane’s upbringing was characterized by a profound love for horses, which she cultivated throughout her life. In Virginia, alongside her family, she initiated the first steps of what would become a lifelong commitment to horse racing and breeding. At Deerfield Riding Academy, she imparted her passion to others by giving riding lessons, while her children embraced the lifestyle—Jill excelling as a show rider and Richard gaining hands-on experience managing stables.
In 1974, the Schosbergs relocated to New York, purchasing Pine Lane Farm near Katonah. This move solidified Jane’s role in the New York racing scene, where she developed a foundation broodmare named Dot in Spot. Through her efforts, multiple foals were bred under her name, many achieving significant success on the track. These accomplishments highlighted her strategic approach to breeding and her ability to produce top-tier racehorses.
Jane’s influence extended beyond New York, frequently visiting Kentucky to participate in sales at Keeneland and Fasig-Tipton. There, she built strong relationships with prominent studs like Denali Stud, Ashford Stud, and Coolmore America. Her network in the Bluegrass region underscored her commitment to advancing the quality of thoroughbreds. Notably, her champion horses included Cyanea, the 1982 New York-bred Champion 2-year-old filly, and Mellow Roll, who earned over half a million dollars and was recognized as the New York-bred Champion Two-Year-Old Male in 1997. Jane’s enduring passion for horse racing and breeding left an indelible mark on the industry, inspiring future generations.
