Recently, Lindenwood University's football team has announced the addition of a seasoned coach to their staff. Lavell Jackson, who will take on the role of wide receivers coach, brings with him an extensive background in collegiate football coaching. Head coach Jed Stugart expressed enthusiasm about welcoming Jackson back to the program, highlighting his strong alignment with the team's culture and values. Over the past seven years, Jackson has made significant contributions at Minnesota State as a defensive backs coach and assistant defensive coordinator. His leadership has been instrumental in securing multiple NCAA Division II playoff appearances and championship game participation.
Before joining Lindenwood, Jackson had a remarkable career at various institutions. At Minnesota State, he played a pivotal role in shaping the defense, leading the Vikings to five NCAA Division II playoff appearances and a championship game in 2019. Under his guidance, several players earned all-conference honors, including three All-Americans and one NSIC Defensive Newcomer of the Year. During his tenure, Minnesota State achieved an impressive record of 63-17. Prior to this, Jackson spent four years at Bethany College as defensive coordinator and associate head coach, where he coached numerous All-KCAC student-athletes and helped improve the team's pass defense ranking.
Jackson's coaching journey began earlier at Missouri Valley College, where he coached defensive backs and developed three All-HAAC Student-Athletes. He also had two stints at Sioux Falls, initially as an assistant defensive backs coach in 2010, contributing to a 13-1 season and a NAIA national championship game appearance. In 2013, he returned to Sioux Falls as the cornerbacks coach. Between these positions, Jackson served at MidAmerica Nazarene University and Thorton Township High School. At MidAmerica Nazarene, he excelled in both coaching and administrative roles, leading the defense to top rankings in pass defense and efficiency. At Thorton Township, he was involved in special teams coordination and defensive coaching, helping the team achieve notable success in conference play and state tournaments.
Lavell Jackson's transition into coaching was influenced by his own playing career. As a player, he spent four seasons at the University of Sioux Falls, contributing significantly to the team's success. He helped USF secure NAIA Championships in 2008 and 2009, earning All-GPAC honors for punt returning in 2009. This firsthand experience on the field has undoubtedly shaped his coaching philosophy and approach to mentoring young athletes.
In addition to his athletic achievements, Jackson holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from Sioux Falls and a master’s degree in organizational leadership from MidAmerica Nazarene University. These educational milestones have equipped him with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel not only on the sidelines but also in fostering the personal and professional development of his players. His academic background complements his coaching expertise, making him a well-rounded asset to the Lindenwood football program.
