LSU Baseball Embraces Fresh Talent for 2025 Season
2025-01-08

The LSU Tigers baseball team is set to embark on a transformative 2025 campaign, marked by an influx of new faces and fresh strategies. With only two returning pitchers from last season's top performers and six returning starters in the lineup, the team has bolstered its roster with 13 new hitters, including transfers and freshmen. This strategic move has positioned LSU as the No. 2 team in Perfect Game’s preseason rankings, despite the significant turnover. However, the true test will be how these newcomers adapt to the competitive SEC conference. Coach Jay Johnson emphasizes versatility and depth as key elements for success, both in the pitching staff and batting order.

Building Depth in Pitching Staff

Coach Johnson plans to develop a robust pitching rotation by stretching out eight pitchers who can serve as potential starters or multi-inning relievers. This approach aims to address last year's struggles with bullpen depth and finding reliable starters. By preparing these pitchers early, Johnson hopes to create a versatile pitching staff capable of handling the demands of SEC competition.

To achieve this, LSU is focusing on developing pitchers like sophomore Kade Anderson, UC San Diego transfer Anthony Eyanson, and junior college transfer Conner Ware, among others. The emphasis is not just on stamina but also on diversifying their pitch repertoires. For instance, Gavin Guidry has been working on improving his fastball to complement his slider, while Zac Cowan and William Schmidt have been refining their breaking balls and changeups. These efforts aim to ensure that each pitcher can effectively navigate through multiple innings against tough SEC lineups.

Enhancing Lineup Versatility

The Tigers' offensive strategy for 2025 centers around creating a more versatile and flexible batting order. Last season's lineup lacked depth and versatility, making it difficult to match up against strong pitching and bullpens. This year, LSU has added eight left-handed hitters, two switch hitters, and multiple options at every position on the field. The goal is to build a well-rounded team that can adapt to various game situations.

Coach Johnson acknowledges that some positions remain undecided, such as catcher, outfield, and third base. However, the addition of versatile players like Tanner Reaves and Daniel Dickinson, along with talented freshmen Derek Curiel and Cade Arrambide, provides the team with numerous options. Johnson stresses the importance of depth to protect the team from relying too heavily on any single player. By fostering a competitive environment where up to 15 positional players could see action in a game, LSU aims to create a resilient and adaptable lineup ready to face the challenges of the upcoming season.
