In September, Maryland transfer running back Roman Hemby made his way to Bloomington. His performance on September 28 at Indiana was remarkable, as he amassed 165 all-purpose yards and scored two touchdowns. And now, he's coming back. Just days after entering the transfer portal, 247Sports national analyst Matt Zenitz reported that Hemby will be at Indiana this weekend for a visit.
Impressive Career Stats at Maryland
Hemby led the Terps in 2024 with an impressive 134 carries, racking up 607 rushing yards and six touchdown runs. He also showcased his receiving skills, catching 40 passes for 273 yards and one score. Over four seasons at Maryland, he played in 42 games and accumulated an astonishing 2,347 yards on the ground with 22 touchdowns. His average of 4.9 yards per carry is a testament to his running ability. Additionally, he has caught 112 passes for 921 passing yards and five touchdowns. Hemby holds an esteemed position in Maryland program history, ranking eighth all-time with 22 career rush TDs, 12th on the career rushing yards list, and tied for fourth in total TDs (27).In 2023, Hemby started in all 13 games and rushed 142 times for 680 yards, averaging 4.8 yards per carry. He scored four touchdowns on the ground and caught 38 passes for 349 yards and three more touchdowns. In 2022, he finished the season ranked third among all FBS freshmen in yards from scrimmage with 1,287 and scored the second-most rushing touchdowns ever by a Maryland freshman with 10. He was honored with Honorable Mention All-Big Ten and College Football News Third Team Freshman All-American.Hemby played in only four games during the 2021 season, which opened the door for a redshirt senior season in 2025. There was a prediction this week by On3 national analyst Pete Nakos that Hemby would transfer to Texas Tech. However, Nakos changed his prediction to Indiana on Thursday.Hemby is a product of Baltimore, Md. and attended John Carroll H.S. IU coach Curt Cignetti was likely aware of him while he was the coach at James Madison in nearby Virginia. Despite being unranked by 247Sports and a 2-star at Rivals, the 6-foot and 208-pound Hemby is one of the top-rated running backs in the transfer portal.
