2025-01-16

The illustrious career of former Texas football star Michael Huff has earned him a place in the annals of college sports history. On Wednesday, it was announced that Huff will be inducted into the 2025 College Football Hall of Fame. Known for his exceptional skills on the field, Huff played as a defensive back for the Longhorns from 2002 to 2005. His achievements include winning the Thorpe Award and contributing significantly to the team's success, including their BCS Championship victory over USC. Huff’s legacy continues to inspire current players, such as Jahdae Barron, who recently adopted Huff’s jersey number to honor his impact. After a successful NFL career, Huff remains active in community service, further solidifying his status as a role model.

Huff's journey at the University of Texas was nothing short of remarkable. As a native of Irving, he quickly became one of the most distinguished defensive backs in school history. During his time with the Longhorns, Huff demonstrated outstanding versatility and athleticism, earning accolades both on and off the field. In 2005, he made history by becoming the first player from Texas to win the prestigious Thorpe Award. That same year, Huff delivered an unforgettable performance in the BCS Championship game against USC, where he recorded 12 tackles and a tackle for loss, earning him defensive MVP honors. His contributions were instrumental in securing the championship for the Longhorns.

Beyond his individual accomplishments, Huff left an indelible mark on the program. His jersey number seven has since become a symbol of excellence and tradition. This was evident when Jahdae Barron decided to switch from number 23 to number seven, embracing the responsibility to uphold Huff’s legacy. Barron not only carried the weight of this decision but also excelled, leading the team’s secondary and eventually winning the Thorpe Award himself. The transition highlights the enduring influence Huff has had on successive generations of players.

Huff's impact extended beyond college football. Following his graduation, he was selected seventh overall in the 2006 NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders. Over the course of his eight-year professional career, Huff primarily played for the Raiders but also had brief stints with the Baltimore Ravens and Denver Broncos. Even after retiring from professional play, Huff remained committed to giving back to his community. During the devastating winter storms in Texas in 2021, Huff partnered with Marquez Haynes to provide hundreds of meals to those in need in Irving and surrounding areas, showcasing his dedication to social responsibility.

The induction ceremony for the 2025 College Football Hall of Fame class will take place on December 9th during the 67th NFF Annual Awards Dinner at the Bellagio Hotel & Resort in Las Vegas. Huff’s inclusion in this prestigious group is a testament to his extraordinary talent and lasting impact on the sport. His legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire future athletes, both on and off the field.
