A Proven Leader Joins the Wolverines: Experience Meets Talent in Ann Arbor

Keene's Impressive College Career

Mikey Keene’s college career has been marked by consistent performance and leadership. Over four seasons, he has accumulated significant playing time, participating in 39 games. His statistical record is commendable, completing 67.8% of his passes (793-for-1170) for 65 touchdowns and 28 interceptions. Keene’s reliability was evident during his tenure at UCF and Fresno State, where he consistently demonstrated his ability to lead under pressure.During his time at UCF, Keene had an overlap with Chip Lindsey, now Michigan’s offensive coordinator. In 2022, Keene completed 72.3% of his passes (60-for-83) for 647 yards, six touchdowns, and just one interception in four games before an injury sidelined him. This familiarity with Lindsey adds a layer of comfort and synergy that could prove invaluable for the Wolverines’ offense.

Facing Keene on the Field

Michigan’s defensive coordinator, Wink Martindale, expressed admiration for Keene after facing him in U-M’s Week 1 victory over Fresno State. Despite the final score of 30-10, the game was closely contested until late in the fourth quarter. Keene’s performance kept the Bulldogs competitive, completing 22 of 36 passes for 235 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. Martindale noted Keene’s accuracy on the run and toughness, qualities that will undoubtedly benefit the Wolverines.

Addressing Michigan’s Passing Offense Struggles

The Wolverines faced significant challenges in their passing game during the 2024 season, ranking No. 129 in passing offense with only 133.6 yards per game. Head coach Sherrone Moore recognized the need for experienced talent to complement the incoming freshman Bryce Underwood, who is still 17 years old. The addition of Keene provides a seasoned option capable of handling the pressures of high-stakes games, such as Michigan’s Week 2 matchup against SEC powerhouse Oklahoma.

A Fresh Start with Familiar Faces

The departure of multiple quarterbacks left the Wolverines with limited options heading into the 2025 season. Jack Tuttle retired and transitioned into a coaching role, Jayden Denegal transferred to San Diego State, and Alex Orji entered the transfer portal. Only senior Davis Warren and true freshman Jadyn Davis remained from the previous roster. The arrival of Keene and Underwood offers stability and depth, ensuring the team has reliable quarterbacks for Moore’s second season.Martindale humorously compared Keene to NFL star Kyler Murray, highlighting his dynamic playmaking abilities. With Keene officially joining the Wolverines, Michigan fans can look forward to a more balanced and potent offense in the upcoming season.
