Mountain East Conference Unveils Wheeling University's 2025 Football Schedule
2025-05-01

The Mountain East Conference (MEC) has officially announced the 2025 football schedule, with Wheeling University following shortly after by releasing their detailed lineup. This upcoming season will see five home games for the Cardinals, three of which are concentrated in October, along with two new matchups against unfamiliar opponents. The 2024 season was a successful one for the Cardinals, marking their third consecutive year with a winning record. They finished with an overall record of 6-4 and 5-4 in MEC matches, despite a challenging start to the season. Their performance improved as they navigated through the regular season, eventually securing a crucial victory over West Liberty to end the year on a high note.

As preparations for the 2025 season begin, the Cardinals will engage in three weeks of non-conference play, featuring two entirely new opponents. Their season opener will be on August 28th at Clarion University, continuing their tradition of starting the season against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) teams. In week two, Walsh University will visit Bishop Schmitt Field for the first time under the lights, with a kickoff scheduled for 6 PM. The non-conference portion concludes with a road trip to Painesville, Ohio, where the Cardinals will face the Lake Erie Storm for the first time in program history.

The conference schedule begins with a road game at Fairmont State on September 20th, followed by a bye week. Homecoming festivities will kick off October with a match against West Virginia Wesleyan. October will feature a heavy home schedule, including a showdown with the defending MEC champions, the University of Charleston, on October 11th. The lone road game of the month will take place on October 18th against the Yellow Jackets in Institute, West Virginia, before concluding the month with Frostburg State at home on October 25th.

Entering the final stretch of the season, the Cardinals will honor their seniors during the November 1st home game against Concord. The regular season will conclude with away games at Glenville State on November 8th and the traditional "Battle for Wheeling" at West Liberty on November 15th. Fans will have ample opportunities to witness the Cardinals' prowess at home, particularly during the packed October schedule, while also cheering them on during their road trips in September and November.

Kicking off the 2025 campaign, the Cardinals will travel to Clarion University on Thursday, August 28th, for their season opener. With a strong foundation from the previous season and a balanced home and away schedule, expectations are high for another competitive year for Wheeling University's football team.
