2025-04-26

The No. 3 seed Navy women’s tennis team faced off against second-seeded Boston University in the 2025 Patriot League Semifinals, concluding their season with a tough 4-0 defeat at the Drumlins Tennis Club in Syracuse, New York. Despite a spirited effort in doubles play, Navy could not overcome Boston’s strong singles performance. The match marked the end of an illustrious career for the senior quartet of Sylvia Eklund, Kate Lee, Parvathi Shanker, and Emily Tannenbaum, who have contributed significantly to the Midshipmen's recent successes, including leading the team to its first-ever Patriot League title in 2024.

On Saturday, Navy began the match on a promising note when Emily Zhao and Nina Gulbransen secured a decisive 6-2 win over Julia Lee and Kate Lee in the No. 3 doubles slot. However, this momentum was quickly countered by Boston University as Uma Bakaiyte and Gabriella Mikaul were narrowly edged out by Olivia Fermo and Emily Tannenbaum in a thrilling 6-4 victory. Ultimately, Madison Liu and Blanka DeMicheli sealed the doubles point for BU with a hard-fought 7-5 triumph over Manci Pal and Emma Gu.

Moving into singles action, the Terriers continued their dominance. Gabriella Mikaul swiftly dispatched Grace Li with a commanding 6-0, 6-1 victory on court two, while Bakaiyte followed suit with a resounding 6-2, 6-2 win over Tannenbaum on the top court. With multiple matches extending into tense second and third sets, Rhea Rai clinched the crucial point for Boston by overcoming a spirited challenge from Kate Lee, securing a 7-5, 6-2 straight-set victory on court six.

Coach Keith Puryear expressed pride in his team despite the loss, acknowledging that Boston was the superior side on the day. He emphasized the accomplishments of the graduating seniors, whose leadership and dedication have set a standard for future teams. Looking ahead, Puryear believes that the incoming group will build upon the foundation laid by these four remarkable athletes.

Boston's victory highlighted their superiority in the series, leaving Navy with a 1-14 record overall against them. Nevertheless, the Midshipmen maintain an impressive 8-7 record in league semifinal appearances. Notably, Tannenbaum and Fermo concluded the season with a commendable six-match winning streak in doubles play, underscoring their consistency and skill.
