In the heart of Waco, Texas, the stage was set for an intense battle in the NCAA Individual Championships. Michigan State men's tennis junior Ozan Baris showcased his remarkable skills as he faced off against Columbia's Michael Zheng in the singles final. Baris became the first MSU player to reach a national singles final and the first to make it to two national semifinals in back-to-back years.

Michigan State's Tennis Star Fights for National Glory

First Set: Zheng's Control

The first set witnessed Zheng's dominance as he controlled the match with a long and intense back-and-forth battle. Winning 6-2, he set the tone for the encounter. Despite neither player having been broken on serve on their respective paths to the final, there were three breaks in the first five games, highlighting the competitiveness of the set.

Baris showed his tenacity and determination right from the start, but Zheng's consistent play gave him the upper hand in the opening set. It was a tough start for Baris, but he was not ready to give up just yet.

Second Set: Baris' Comeback

In the second set, Baris came back fighting like a true warrior. He showed his mental strength and ability to bounce back from a tough first set. Winning 6-4, he gave himself a chance to level the match and earn a shot at the national title.

The crowd was on the edge of their seats as Baris fought tooth and nail to turn the tide. His aggressive play and strategic shots paid off as he managed to break Zheng's serve and take control of the set. It was a moment of redemption for Baris and a sign of his potential.

Third Set: Tie-Breaking Drama

Going into the tie-breaking and deciding third set, both Baris and Zheng were looking to win and bring their school their first-ever national title. Baris put up a great effort, but Zheng's smart play and ability to make the crucial shots gave him the edge. Winning 6-2, Zheng emerged victorious and claimed the national title.

Baris was disappointed with the outcome, but he remained composed and showed his sportsmanship. He knew that this was just one setback in his journey and that he would come back stronger. His words after the match, "I'm not going to shy away, there are times where in the tight moments, if I lose or I fall a little short, but I come back stronger," reflected his determination and resilience.

Baris is now the first NCAA National Runner-Up in MSU men's tennis program history. His performance this fall season, with a 13-4 record and currently ranked No. 1 in the ITA Individual Rankings, has been nothing short of exceptional.

He will now head home and prepare with the team for the Spartans' upcoming 2025 spring season. With his eyes set on winning a Big Ten Championship and making a deep run in the NCAA Championships next year, Baris is ready to take on the challenge.

The Spartan junior made his third NCAA Championships appearance and reached the national semifinals last spring. His journey has been filled with ups and downs, but his determination and love for the sport have never wavered.

On January 17, the Spartans will open their spring season at the MSU Tennis Center against Kentucky. Baris will be leading the charge, looking to make his mark and bring glory to Michigan State.
