NCCU Men’s Tennis Team Prepares for Challenging 2025 Spring Season
2025-01-17

The North Carolina Central University (NCCU) men's tennis team is gearing up for an intense start to the 2025 spring season. The Eagles will face formidable competition right from the outset, with matches against ranked opponents NC State and Duke in January. Following a 9-15 record in the previous year, including a strong 3-2 performance in conference play, the team aims to build on its success. Last fall, NCCU showcased impressive performances at various tournaments, culminating in a third-place finish at the HBCU National Tennis Championships. Additionally, the team secured a doubles championship at the inaugural MEAC Individual Championships. Returning players, including seasoned seniors and talented juniors, along with new additions, promise to bring fresh energy and experience to the squad. Head coach D. Curtis Lawson, entering his 25th season, leads a stable coaching staff as they prepare for a competitive campaign.

The Eagles' spring schedule kicks off with back-to-back matches against highly ranked teams. On Saturday, January 18, they will take on No. 22 NC State at 4 p.m., followed by a challenging match against No. 12 Duke on Sunday, January 19 at 5 p.m. This early-season gauntlet sets the tone for what promises to be a rigorous season. Last year, the Eagles faced numerous non-conference opponents, many of whom were ranked, providing valuable experience that will serve them well in the upcoming matches.

In the fall, the NCCU men's tennis team demonstrated their prowess across several tournaments. Notably, they finished third out of 15 teams at the HBCU National Tennis Championships, showcasing their competitive spirit. At the MEAC Individual Championships, senior Hugo Hidalgo Vega and junior Rodrigo Alves clinched the doubles title, highlighting the team's depth and skill. These achievements set a positive foundation for the spring season.

The roster for the 2025 season features a mix of returning veterans and promising newcomers. Seven players return, led by seniors Hidalgo Vega, who was named 2024 MEAC Player of the Year, and captain Oliver Saarinen. Junior Kareem Abdul Hakim, recognized as an All-MEAC Second Team performer in 2024, joins fellow juniors Naresh Bharathy and Neiman Sneed. Transfer student Rodrigo Alves, who paired with Hidalgo Vega to reach the ITA Conference Masters, adds significant talent. Sophomores Antoni Pankowski, formerly of Norfolk State University, and Leo Fortier-Gariepy, along with redshirt Lucas Artigas, round out the roster, bringing additional depth and versatility.

Under the leadership of head coach D. Curtis Lawson, now in his 25th season, the Eagles are poised for another competitive year. Assisted by John McLean IV and Gabriel Cucalon, the coaching staff remains consistent, providing stability and continuity. Despite being predicted to finish second in the MEAC preseason rankings, just 12 points behind South Carolina State, the team is focused on surpassing expectations and achieving success both on and off the court.

With a challenging schedule and a blend of experienced players and fresh faces, the NCCU men's tennis team is ready to make its mark in the 2025 season. Fans can look forward to exciting matches and continued growth as the Eagles strive for excellence in every competition.
