New Jersey's Elite: The 2,000-Point Club in Girls Basketball
2025-01-22

In a remarkable achievement for girls' basketball in New Jersey, Park Ridge senior Allie Shenloogian became the 126th player to score 2,000 career points. Her milestone came during the Owls' victory over Cresskill on January 21, 2025. This accomplishment highlights the growing number of elite players in the state, with several more expected to join this prestigious club in the coming months. The USA TODAY NETWORK New Jersey has meticulously compiled an all-time list of Garden State girls who have achieved this milestone, showcasing the rich history and talent of New Jersey basketball.

Shenloogian's journey to 2,000 points is emblematic of the dedication and skill required to reach such a feat. As the 16th Bergen County girl and third this season to achieve this mark, she joins a select group that includes Macie McCracken of Wildwood and Charlotte Tuhy of Madison. The significance of this milestone extends beyond individual accolades; it reflects the competitive nature and high standards set by New Jersey's basketball programs.

The compilation of this exclusive list began in the summer of 2024, when NorthJersey.com embarked on a comprehensive research project. The team consulted various sources, including archived records from USA TODAY NETWORK New Jersey sites, school athletic administrators, yearbooks, gym banners, and trophy cases. This thorough investigation ensured that the list was presented with 99% accuracy. The parameters for inclusion are stringent: a player must have scored 2,000 points while attending a four-year New Jersey high school, and only points scored within grades 9 through 12 count. For transfer students, only points earned while playing for a New Jersey school are considered.

Among the notable members of this elite group are Kristen Somogyi, who holds the state's all-time scoring record with 3,899 points, and Michelle Sidor, who became the first in Bergen County to surpass 3,000 points. Monica Johnson, standing at just 5-foot-3, made history as the first South Jersey player to reach 2,000 points as a junior. These athletes not only excelled on the court but also went on to successful collegiate and professional careers, further cementing their legacy in the sport.

As the list continues to grow, it underscores the enduring tradition of excellence in New Jersey girls' basketball. Each player's story is unique, reflecting years of hard work, perseverance, and passion for the game. The addition of new members like Allie Shenloogian ensures that this legacy will be carried forward, inspiring future generations of athletes to aim for greatness. The continued success of these players serves as a testament to the strength and depth of New Jersey's basketball community.
