2024-12-16
Utah's football landscape has seen significant changes in its running back room due to transfer portal attrition. However, on a Sunday that brought new hope, the Utes managed to add a valuable player through this very portal. New Mexico State running back Mike Washington's commitment to Kyle Whittingham's program has sparked excitement among fans and coaches alike. Who is this Mike Washington? Let's delve deeper.

Uncover Utah's Running Back Transfers and Their Impact

Who is Mike Washington?

Standing at 6 feet 2 inches and weighing 215 pounds, Mike Washington made a significant impact last season as a junior for the Aggies. He rushed for an impressive 713 yards and scored eight touchdowns. Alongside his rushing prowess, he also added nine receptions for 74 yards and a touchdown. Washington's college football journey began at Buffalo, where he played for three seasons before transferring to New Mexico State, which is just a few hours away from his Utica, New York, home.

Last season, he had two remarkable 100-yard rushing games. Against Western Kentucky, he ran for 152 yards and two touchdowns, showcasing his explosive ability. In the season finale against UTEP, he had 130 yards and a touchdown, leaving a lasting impression. Over his four seasons in college football, he has rushed for a total of 1,832 yards and 18 touchdowns, a testament to his consistent performance.

Utah's Offseason Transfer Additions

Washington is not the only transfer to join the Utes this offseason. He is the sixth transfer commit for the Utes thus far. On Sunday alone, Mississippi State wide receiver Creed Whittemore pledged his commitment to the Utes, adding to the team's depth. Utah's other transfer portal additions include New Mexico quarterback Devon Dampier, Garden City cornerback Jeremiah Caldwell, Missouri punter Orion Phillips, and Oregon linebacker Jaxson Jones.

Adding players to the running back room has been a top priority for the Utes this offseason. They faced the loss of leading rusher Micah Bernard and Charlie Vincent to graduation and saw three running backs enter the transfer portal. With these new additions, the Utes are looking to strengthen their backfield and continue their success on the field.
