North Jersey Interscholastic Conference Season Review 2024
2024-11-21
Our full girls tennis statewide postseason honors package is set for Monday, Nov. 25. However, we decided to release our conference honors early. Here is the detailed publishing schedule: Nov. 20 for BCSL, Big North, CAL, Colonial, and CVC; Nov. 21 for GMC, HCIAL, NJAC, NJIC, and Olympic; Nov. 22 for SEC, Shore, Skyland, TCC, and Union; and Nov. 25 for Player of the Year, Team of the Year, Coach of the Year, All-State, All-Group, South Jersey Times, and Times of Trenton.

Player of the Year: Sylvie Yao, Dwight-Englewood

This season, the everyday lineup at Dwight-Englewood underwent significant changes. Sylvie Yao, despite missing a fair share of matches, including most of them, was dominant when she took the court. She only suffered one loss in dual matches to state singles tournament runner-up Anika Paul. Yao also emerged victorious against players like Priscilla Chow, Anvita Shankar, and Kylee Hung. Additionally, she won the first singles title at the Bergen County Tournament over Holy Angels' Jaime Carlin and defeated Phoebe Devine in the semifinals. Late in the year, Yao advanced to the quarterfinals of the state singles tournament after defeating Michelle Lee, Isabella Cardinal, Alana Sturgis, and Nicolette Baksay. In another aspect, the team's performance was also remarkable. With just one senior starter graduating, the team has the potential to take the next step in the upcoming season.

Team of the Year: Saddle River Day

Selecting a team for this spot was a tough decision, but Saddle River Day emerged as the top choice. The addition of Kylee Hung, a transfer from Ridgewood, played a crucial role. Hung went on to win the first singles title at the Bergen County Fall Invitational. Moreover, Rachel Magnus won the second singles title, Jackie Sidler won the third singles title, Olivia Fujita/Alison Rosenson won the first doubles title, and Emma Yelsky/Eva Burgis won the second doubles title at the tournament. For the entire season, Saddle River Day had an impressive record of 13-2, including 10-0 in the Patriot division. They reached the Non-Public, North sectional final but unfortunately lost to No. 1-ranked Pingry. With a strong core and only one senior starter graduating, Saddle River Day is poised for great things in the future.
