Northern Illinois Joins Mountain West Conference for 2026 Football Season
2025-01-07

In a significant shift in collegiate sports, Northern Illinois University has officially joined the Mountain West Conference (MWC) as its ninth football-playing member for the 2026 season. This decision comes after careful evaluation by the MWC Board of Directors and Directors of Athletics, who were impressed by NIU's strong football history and commitment to academic excellence. The move promises new opportunities for student-athletes and enhances the national presence of Huskie Football. Meanwhile, other changes are reshaping the conference landscape, with several schools transitioning to new leagues.

A New Chapter for Northern Illinois Football

In the crisp autumn of 2025, Northern Illinois University made headlines when it was welcomed into the Mountain West Conference. The university’s board finalized this strategic move, marking an exciting new chapter for the Huskies' football program. Gloria Nevarez, commissioner of the MWC, expressed enthusiasm about NIU’s addition, highlighting the school's impressive record of five Mid-American Conference (MAC) titles since 2011. Under head coach Thomas Hammock, the team has demonstrated resilience, notably upsetting Notre Dame—a College Football Playoff semifinalist—and finishing the season with an 8-5 record after a victory in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.

The expansion brings the MWC to nine football-playing members for the 2026 season, alongside Air Force, Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico, San Jose State, UNLV, UTEP, and Wyoming. UC Davis and Grand Canyon will join as non-football members. However, the conference also faces departures, with Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State, Utah State, and Gonzaga moving to the Pac-12. Despite these changes, the MWC remains committed to fostering competitive excellence and academic success.

From a broader perspective, the MAC will continue with 12 football programs, including newcomers like UMass, ensuring a robust competition within that league.

This transition represents more than just a change in conference affiliation; it symbolizes a commitment to growth and innovation. For Northern Illinois, joining the MWC opens doors to greater exposure and competitive challenges. It underscores the importance of adaptability and strategic planning in collegiate sports, offering valuable lessons for institutions navigating similar transitions.
