2025-03-18

This past weekend witnessed Northwestern University's men’s and women’s tennis teams in action against formidable opponents. While students focused on their final exams, these athletes demonstrated resilience by competing fiercely within the Big Ten Conference. Both teams faced rivals ranked among the nation’s top 60, showcasing their ability to hold their ground amidst stiff competition. The men’s team achieved significant victories over Indiana and Purdue, while the women delivered a strong performance, including a sweep against Nebraska before narrowly losing to Iowa. These results highlight the Wildcats' competitive spirit and potential as conference play progresses.

The Northwestern men’s squad, currently holding a 10-8 record with a 3-1 mark in the Big Ten, started their journey at Indiana. Despite Indiana being ranked 51st and mired in a four-match losing streak, the Wildcats showcased dominance from the start. In doubles, after Indiana claimed the initial point, Felix Nordby and Chad Miller retaliated effectively, followed closely by Max Bengtsson and Vincent Yang securing the crucial third point. This momentum carried into singles play where Nordby swiftly extended the lead with a decisive victory. Contributions from Chad Miller and Saiprakash Goli sealed a 4-1 triumph over Indiana.

Continuing their success, Northwestern traveled to Purdue for another challenging match. Although Purdue captured the doubles point early, the Wildcats managed to turn the tables in singles matches. Nordby led the charge with an impressive win, supported by Miller and Bengtsson, who each delivered pivotal victories. Ultimately, it was Jake Casey who clinched the deciding point against Purdue, securing another vital win. These victories marked Northwestern's first over ranked opponents this season, propelling them into fifth place in the Big Ten standings.

On the women’s side, Northwestern, ranked 38th, faced off against Nebraska and Iowa. Against Nebraska, Kiley Rabjohns and Britany Lau initiated the scoring with a doubles win, setting the stage for Sydney Pratt and Neena Feldman to secure the doubles point. Singles performances were equally dominant, leading to a comprehensive 4-0 sweep of Nebraska. However, their encounter with Iowa proved more challenging. After losing the doubles point, individual efforts from Pratt and Rabjohns kept the Wildcats competitive. Though ultimately falling short with a 4-3 loss, Autumn Rabjohns celebrated her first career Big Ten singles win, highlighting promising talent within the team.

The weekend’s results underscore the strength and determination of both Northwestern tennis teams. Demonstrating their capacity to compete with higher-ranked teams, they have bolstered confidence heading into upcoming matches. The men will host USC and UCLA, while the women prepare to face Washington and Oregon. As the season advances, anticipation grows for how these Wildcats will continue to perform against some of the nation’s best collegiate tennis programs.
