Oaklawn Explores Innovative Schedule Adjustments for Upcoming Season
2025-03-14

Change is on the horizon for Oaklawn as it contemplates reshaping its racing calendar. The track's leadership, under President Lou Cella, has initiated discussions with local stakeholders and horsemen regarding potential modifications. Currently operating races from Fridays to Sundays, Oaklawn plans to introduce a four-day racing week during December, pausing activities for two to three weeks in January before resuming with an extended Thursday-to-Sunday schedule.

Racing regulations play a pivotal role in these considerations. With a restriction of 68 racing days per year, strategic planning becomes essential. Additionally, accommodating Kentucky Derby points preps requires precise timing. Feedback from prominent jockeys indicates that a revised schedule could enhance their participation. Final approval rests with the Arkansas Racing Commission, ensuring all adjustments align with regulatory standards.

Innovation extends beyond race scheduling as Oaklawn also explores shifting some major stakes events to Sundays instead of Saturdays. This idea emerged after this year's Rebel Stakes was successfully moved to a Sunday due to adverse weather conditions. The shift proved advantageous, drawing over 35,000 attendees and generating more than $19 million in betting handle. Such outcomes highlight the potential benefits of flexible scheduling, demonstrating how adaptability can lead to increased engagement and financial success in the racing industry.
