Early Life and Racing Career
Oatsee, bred by Bentley Smith, was out of the stakes-placed With Every Wish. She raced as a homebred under the guidance of Carl Nafzger and earned $110,143 during her racing career. Her record stood at 21: 2-4-5, with one stakes placement. Despite not achieving great success on the track, Oatsee was about to embark on a new chapter in her life.Her early years set the stage for what was to come. Oatsee's true glory lay in the foaling barn. She had 17 foals, with 14 starting and 11 winning. Four of these winners were graded stakes winners, including the 2011 Preakness Stakes winner Shackleford, fellow Grade 1 winner Lady Joanne, Grade 2 winner Afleeting Lady, and multiple Grade 3 winner Baghdaria. Her progeny have earned more than $6 million, a testament to her breeding prowess.She produced winners for Smith and later for Belvedere Farm's Mike Lauffer and Bill Cubbedge. One of her notable foals was the A.P. Indy son Stephanoatsee. He was a stakes winner and multiple graded-stakes placed, standing stud in New York and Arkansas. Another standout was Grand Portege, the dam of multiple Grade 3 winner Florida Won, and the unraced mare Haysee. Haysee produced graded-stakes placed Uncle Lino, who set a track record for 1 1/16 miles at Los Alamitos when he won the 2016 California Chrome Stakes in 1:40.82.Oatsee's influence extended far beyond her own racing days.
