Pegasus World Cup Invitations Announced: Elite Horses Set to Compete
2025-01-02

With the prestigious Pegasus World Cup Day just around the corner, Gulfstream Park has unveiled its initial list of invitees and reserves for the highly anticipated event on January 25. The $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) and the $1 million Pegasus World Cup Turf (G1) are set to feature some of the most decorated thoroughbreds in the racing world. Among the notable invitees are Kentucky Derby victor Mystik Dan and fellow Grade 1 winners such as Saudi Crown, Senor Buscador, Stronghold, Mixto, and White Abarrio. Additionally, familiar faces and new contenders alike have been included in both the main invitee list and the reserves.

A Closer Look at the Invitees and Reserves

In the heart of winter, Gulfstream Park is buzzing with excitement as it prepares for one of the most significant events in the horse racing calendar. The Pegasus World Cup Invitational, a race for 4-year-olds and older, will see 12 horses invited and nine placed on reserve. Noteworthy among the invitees is Mystik Dan, who secured a thrilling victory in the Kentucky Derby but has faced mixed results since. Despite his second-place finish in the Preakness Stakes and less favorable performances in subsequent races, Mystik Dan remains a key contender. Senor Buscador stands out as the top earner, boasting over $12.9 million from 23 starts, including a head-turning win in the $20 million Saudi Cup last February.

The Pegasus World Cup Turf also promises an exciting lineup, featuring seasoned campaigners like Nations Pride and Johannes. Nations Pride, trained by Charlie Appleby, has raced across six countries, clinching two Grade 1 victories. Johannes, fresh off a win at the San Gabriel Stakes on December 26, has had an impressive year, winning five of six races in 2024. Both lists will be updated on January 8 and January 15, ensuring that only the best horses make it to the starting gate.

From a journalist's perspective, the announcement of these invitees and reserves underscores the competitive nature of top-tier horse racing. It highlights the importance of consistent performance and the unpredictable yet thrilling nature of the sport. For fans and enthusiasts, this early glimpse into the potential field adds layers of anticipation and excitement, setting the stage for what promises to be an unforgettable day of racing.
