The Pilots' Promising Path: Bethel University's Men’s Basketball Team Soars in 2024
2024-12-26
Under the guidance of Coach Steve Drabyn, Bethel University's men’s basketball team is making significant strides. Despite early setbacks in Florida, the Pilots have maintained a strong record and are leading the Crossroads League with impressive performances. Drabyn emphasizes leadership, balance, and defensive prowess as key factors driving their success.

Building Momentum for an Unstoppable Season

A Strong Start Sets the Tone

Bethel University's men’s basketball team has made an indelible mark on the 2024-25 season, starting off with a robust 10-3 overall record. The Pilots have been particularly dominant within the Crossroads League, where they hold a perfect 4-0 record, positioning them at the top of the standings. This stellar performance comes despite two challenging losses in Florida, which included facing tough competition from Florida Memorial University and No. 18 Ave Maria University. Coach Drabyn, a former standout guard himself, reflects positively on his team's current standing. “We've had a great start, and I'm genuinely pleased with our progress,” he remarked during a recent interview. He highlights the importance of leadership within the squad, noting that player-led teams tend to perform better under pressure. The presence of natural leaders among the players has significantly contributed to this dynamic.

Leadership and Team Dynamics Fuel Success

The core strength of the Pilots lies in their leadership and cohesive team dynamics. Drabyn praises the team's ability to practice diligently and play with intensity. A harmonious blend of experienced veterans and promising rookies has fostered a positive environment. This synergy extends beyond individual talent; it's about collective effort and mutual respect. One of the standout features of this team is its balanced scoring. Five players average double figures, led by junior forward Alonas Peciulis and sophomore guard Luke McBride, who contribute 15.6 and 15.5 points per game, respectively. This distribution makes the Pilots difficult to defend, as opponents cannot focus on a single scorer. Drabyn believes this balance is crucial for sustained success throughout the season.

Defensive Dominance: The Pillar of Strength

Drabyn also lauds his team's defensive capabilities, calling it the best group he's coached in his six years at Bethel. The Pilots allow just 75.9 points per game, a testament to their defensive resilience. Although they faced higher-scoring games in Florida, Drabyn acknowledges the quality of their opponents and remains focused on improving consistency.A key figure in this defensive stronghold is Trent Edwards, a 6-foot-4 graduate student guard. Edwards averages 11.9 points per game while leading in minutes played and assists (5.4 per game). His versatility and intelligence on the court make him an invaluable asset. Drabyn describes Edwards as a "smart, tough, and crafty" player who leads by example and excels defensively.

Veteran Experience and Rising Talent

Veteran presence plays a crucial role in the Pilots' success. Preston Phillips, a 6-8 graduate student forward, has returned from injury and contributes significantly with 13.1 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. His experience adds depth to the lineup, especially in the paint. Additionally, young talents like redshirt freshman Alex Ellenson and freshman Payton Baird bring fresh energy and potential.Despite losing two of their top scorers from last season—Drew Lutz and Nathan Aerts—the team has adapted well. Their depth and adaptability ensure that no single loss cripples their momentum. The Pilots started the season with an impressive 8-0 streak before facing their first defeat against No. 5 Georgetown College. Since then, they have secured wins over formidable opponents such as Goshen College, Huntington University, Indiana Wesleyan University, and Saint Francis.

Looking Ahead: Consistency and Growth

As the season progresses, Coach Drabyn emphasizes the need for consistency, particularly on defense. While acknowledging the challenges posed by the Florida games, he remains optimistic about the team's ability to improve. Drabyn aims to see his team maintain steady, winning basketball into February, avoiding the late-season struggles that have plagued them in previous years. The Pilots face upcoming matches, including a home game against Cornerstone University on December 30 and a road game at Mount Vernon Nazarene on January 4. Drabyn knows the league will only get tougher, but he believes his team is ready for the challenge. With a focus on consistent improvement and leveraging their strengths, the Pilots aim to make a lasting impact in the Crossroads League and beyond.
