Prep Horses Gear Up for San Felipe Stakes
2025-02-23

Excitement builds as several promising three-year-olds prepare for the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes, a key event in the Kentucky Derby 2025 prep series. Under the watchful eye of trainer Bob Baffert, these young thoroughbreds underwent crucial training sessions at Santa Anita Park on Sunday. Among them, Barnes and Rodríguez stand out as notable contenders.

Barnes, currently favored at 7-1 odds for the upcoming Derby, demonstrated impressive speed during his workout. Partnering with fellow nominee Mellencamp, he completed six furlongs in a swift 1:12.2. This undefeated colt has already showcased his potential with a victory in the San Vicente (G2) earlier this year. The San Felipe will mark his debut around two turns, adding an intriguing element to his performance. Meanwhile, Mellencamp, despite not yet securing a win in four starts, showed promise with a five-furlong time of 1:00.2.

Rodríguez, who narrowly missed victory in the Robert B. Lewis (G2), also engaged in rigorous preparation. He trained alongside Cavalieri, winner of the La Cañada (G3), with both horses clocking an impressive five furlongs in 59.6 seconds. Rodríguez's stablemate, Citizen Bull, the reigning champion two-year-old male, completed six furlongs in 1:13.0. Although nominated for the San Felipe, Citizen Bull is likely to target the prestigious Santa Anita Derby instead.

The road to the Kentucky Derby is filled with challenges, but these young athletes are proving their mettle through dedication and rigorous training. Each step forward brings them closer to achieving their dreams, embodying the spirit of perseverance and excellence that defines the sport of horse racing. Their hard work and determination serve as a testament to the resilience and passion that drive competitors to strive for greatness.
