2024-12-23

The path to the Kentucky Derby is heating up as several promising contenders completed their training sessions this week. Notable performances were recorded by horses like Poster, Coal Battle, and Big Boat, among others. These young athletes are showcasing their potential through impressive workouts, setting the stage for what promises to be an exciting race season ahead.

Poster and Coal Battle: Rising Stars in Training

Two of the most promising young horses, Poster and Coal Battle, have been making headlines with their recent workouts. Both have demonstrated strong performances that bode well for their future prospects in the Kentucky Derby. Their trainers express confidence in the progress each horse has made since their last races.

Poster, a three-time winner under the guidance of trainer Eoin Harty, clocked an impressive 36.22 seconds over three furlongs at Three Diamonds Training Center. This performance, faster than any other horse at the same distance on Monday, underscores his potential. Despite not being a top pick in the latest Kentucky Derby Future Wager, Poster's undefeated record and Grade 2 victory in the Remsen Stakes make him a dark horse contender. Meanwhile, Coal Battle, trained by Lonnie Briley, worked four furlongs in 49.4 seconds at Oaklawn. Although his time was not the fastest, it marked his first workout since winning the Remington Springboard Mile, highlighting his steady improvement.

Kentucky Derby Contenders Showcased in Early Workouts

A series of workouts provided valuable insights into the form of various Kentucky Derby hopefuls. Several horses, including Big Boat, Studlydoright, and Voila Magic, have shown promising signs during their training sessions. Each performance offers clues about which horses might be ready to challenge for the coveted roses.

Big Boat, under trainer James DiVito, posted a solid five-furlong time of 1:00.6 at Oaklawn, ranking fourth out of 22 horses at that distance. His second-place finish in an allowance race on December 13 suggests he is building momentum. Studlydoright, another Nyquist progeny, completed six furlongs in 1:16.6 at Laurel Park, topping the charts for that distance. Trainer John Robb noted that this was Studlydoright's first workout since placing fourth in the Remsen Stakes. Lastly, Voila Magic, trained by Steve Asmussen, recorded a respectable three-furlong time of 39.4 seconds at Fair Grounds. While sixth fastest among seven horses, this was his first workout since finishing fourth in the Louisiana Champions Day Juvenile. These early indicators provide a glimpse into the competitive field shaping up for the Kentucky Derby.
