Preparation for the Kentucky Derby: Horses in Focus
2025-02-22

The path to the prestigious Kentucky Derby is heating up as several promising contenders underwent rigorous training sessions on Saturday morning. Among these, Journalism, trained by Michael McCarthy, showcased impressive performance with a five-furlong workout at Santa Anita. The horse, who secured victory in the Grade 2 Los Alamitos Futurity last December, clocked in at 1:01.0, maintaining consistent form since late January. As anticipation builds, Journalism remains a strong contender in the Kentucky Derby markets, currently quoted at 30-1 odds.

Beyond Journalism, a host of other hopefuls also engaged in critical workouts across various tracks. Burning Glory, under the guidance of trainer Bill Mott, completed four furlongs in 50.0 seconds at Payson Park, demonstrating steady progress following his third-place finish in the Holy Bull (G3). Meanwhile, Filoso, trained by Chad Summers, tackled six furlongs in 1:13.9 at Palm Meadows, while Incentive Pay, managed by Chad Brown, achieved the second-fastest time over four furlongs at Payson Park. Kale’s Angel, Keep It Easy, and Legitimate each delivered notable performances, with Kale’s Angel clocking an impressive 1:00.0 for five furlongs at San Luis Rey.

The excitement surrounding the Kentucky Derby extends to horses like Omaha Omaha, Owen Almighty, Romanesque, Sacrosanct, Sorcerer’s Silver, and Uncle Jim, all of whom participated in significant workouts this weekend. These young talents, representing different stables and trainers, are gradually refining their skills in preparation for the upcoming challenges. The dedication and hard work put in by these horses and their teams reflect the spirit of competition and excellence that defines the sport of horse racing. Each step taken on the track brings them closer to realizing their dreams of glory on the first Saturday in May.
