Providence AD Apologizes for Offensive Chants During BYU Game

During Tuesday night's game at Providence, BYU basketball found itself on the receiving end of an offensive chant. The Providence student section engaged in this behavior, chanting a message related to people affiliated with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. BYU's ownership group is the Latter-day Saint Church. A BYU fan in attendance managed to capture a video of the offensive chant and shared it on social media, cautioning about explicit language.
Apology from Providence Athletic Director
Steven Napolillo, the Providence Athletic Director, issued a sincere apology on X to BYU. He stated, "I want to apologize to @BYUMBB, their coaches & institution for unacceptable chants by our student body tonight. Once it was brought to my attention, I went to the student body & had them stop. That does not represent who Providence College is & what we stand for. We are sorry." This was BYU's first trip to Providence since the 1981 NCAA Tournament. They had never previously faced the Friars on their home court. Providence emerged victorious in the game, winning with a score of 83-64. The matchup formed part of the BIG EAST-Big 12 Battle. It is noteworthy that this is the first time in recent years that BYU basketball has received such an offensive chant. In 2021, BYU football was on the receiving end of similar chants at USC, and in 2022 at Oregon. Both institutions issued apologies the following day.Upcoming Road Games for BYU Basketball
BYU basketball does not have another road game until next month. They are set to travel to face nationally ranked Houston on January 4 during Big 12 play.
