Rachael Blackmore, the remarkable jockey who made history by winning the Grand National in 2021, is currently on the path to recovery. Her neck injury sustained in a fall at Downpatrick in September has kept her sidelined. Since then, she has achieved numerous feats, becoming the first female jockey to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2022 and the Champion Hurdle twice on Honeysuckle.

Recovery from the Neck Injury

Blackmore's past injuries are quite extensive, including fractures of her collarbone, nose, wrist, hip, and ankle. The fall at Downpatrick in September led to her current need for a neck brace. Initially, she thought the recovery would be quick, but she soon realized that when the neck is involved, the process slows down significantly. She gives an update 12 days ago, stating that all is going well and she hopes to be back the week before Christmas. She feels good and progress is being made every day, thanks to the support of good people helping her get back on track.

The New 'State of the Art' Facility

Rachael Blackmore has learned about the plans for a new 'state of the art' Irish Injured Jockeys' Fund facility in Kildare. This facility is modeled on Britain's three rehabilitation centres in Lambourn, Malton, and Newmarket. It is in its infancy but has huge potential to assist jockeys. Blackmore believes it is great to see the difference the Betfair Serial Winners' Fund is making. Although no jockey wants to end up in such a facility due to an injury, it is comforting to know that they are there.

Betfair's Role and the Serial Winners' Fund

During her time on the sidelines, Blackmore made a film with Betfair to understand how the £250,000 she helped raise last season through the Betfair Serial Winners' Fund is being utilized. This shows the impact of such initiatives in supporting jockeys during their recovery. It highlights the importance of collective efforts in providing assistance to those in need.
