Renowned Coach John Oxton Bids Farewell After a Legendary Career

John Oxton, one of only six coaches in Minnesota boys basketball history to achieve 700 career victories, has announced his retirement after an illustrious 33-year tenure at Lakeville North. With a final record of 706 wins, Oxton leaves behind an impressive legacy that includes leading 12 teams to the state tournament and securing the championship title in 2014. Known for his dedication and passion, Oxton expressed heartfelt gratitude towards the relationships formed throughout his coaching journey.

Oxton's career began in Montana, where he led Gardiner to the Class C state championship in 1989 before returning to Minnesota. Hired as the Lakeville High School coach in 1990, he quickly established himself as a formidable figure in the world of high school basketball. Under his leadership, Lakeville made its inaugural appearance in the state tournament in 1995, marking a significant milestone for the school. His later tenure at Lakeville North saw even greater success, including eight consecutive appearances in the Class 4A state tournament from 2012 to 2019.

During these years, Oxton guided the Panthers to four championship games, emerging victorious in 2014 while finishing as runner-up in 2012, 2016, and 2019. Although he took a brief hiatus from coaching between 2006 and 2008, his return solidified his status as one of the most respected figures in the sport. His commitment to excellence earned him induction into several halls of fame, including the Minnesota Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
