2024-12-07
The University of Rhode Island men's basketball team has achieved a remarkable start, with a satisfying rivalry win that stands out after more than 70 years. This victory not only showcases their skills but also their ability to handle pressure in crucial moments. The Rams delivered an outstanding performance down the stretch to stop Providence, a program aiming to extend its recent dominance in this series.

The Rams' Comeback Victory and Its Impact

Thomas' Steal and 3-Pointer: A Game-Changing Moment

Sebastian Thomas's steal and subsequent 3-pointer were critical in the 69-63 triumph. With just minutes left, he poked the ball away from Jayden Pierre in the lane and quickly found himself with the ball as the shot clock ran down. Stepping back on the right wing, he drilled a 3-pointer over Bryce Hopkins, bringing the loudest roar from the 7,685 fans in attendance. This moment not only gave the Rams a significant lead but also boosted Thomas's confidence to an all-time high. "Right now my confidence is at an all-time high," Thomas said. "And I'm making shots like that."In the final minutes, Thomas's defensive prowess and shooting ability were on full display, proving to be decisive factors in the game. His actions inspired the team and the crowd, creating a memorable moment in the history of this rivalry.

Green's Key Contributions in the Final Stretch

David Green's pair of buckets inside played a crucial role in pushing the Rams to the finish. With the score tied at 59, he dropped a hook in the lane and another from the right post. These baskets gave the Rams a 60-59 lead and helped them dodge a potential tying 3-pointer by Corey Floyd Jr. Later, when Jamarques Lawrence hit a pair of free throws with 9.5 seconds left, it sealed the game for the Rams.URI coach Archie Miller emphasized the importance of being able to handle the ball in pressure situations. "When you have to run things in the second half and the pressure is on, you better be able to handle the ball," Miller said. "I think Sebastian – and, at times, Jamarques – can do that." Green's performance demonstrated his ability to step up in crucial moments and contribute to the team's success.

Adjustments in the Second Half Led to a Comeback

In the first half, Providence controlled the tempo and shut URI out on the fast break, limiting the Rams to 34.4% shooting. However, in the second half, the Rams made some key adjustments. They used David Fuchs off the bench and his hard jam off a lob from Thomas with 13:09 left was an example of the change. The Rams managed just 12 points in the opening 20 minutes but collected 22 after the break, shooting 51.7% from the field.Thomas also noticed the difference in their play. "We had to get downhill," Thomas said. "In the first half I went (0-4) – I was forcing my floaters a little bit. In the second half I ended up hitting the roller a lot." These adjustments allowed the Rams to take the lead for good and secure the victory.

Providence's Struggles and URI's Continued Form

Providence (6-4) controlled the tempo in the first half and built a double-digit lead. House racked up 14 points and was 6-for-8 from the field, but his eight teammates could only match that total and shot 5-for-24. The Friars were locked up on the perimeter over the final 20 minutes, closing 1-for-10 from 3-point range and missing some key free throws.URI (9-0), on the other hand, was coming off an 84-78 grinder against Yale and was able to extend their form here. The Rams have shrugged off two disappointing seasons under Miller and look confident through the opening month of the season. They now have a trip to Brown on deck, where they will face another tough test."In the summer I knew our group was different," House said. "I just knew. For us to be able to show everybody else, it feels good." This victory is a testament to the team's hard work and determination, and they are ready to take on the next challenge.
