Rutherford Rams Gear Up for Spring Football Season
2025-05-01

As temperatures rise, the return of football season is in full swing. On April 28, the spring season commenced, allowing teams a four-week period to adjust and showcase what lies ahead for the next competitive cycle. In this spirit, The News Herald has initiated a series of visits to all six schools within Bay County, providing early insights into each local football program's upcoming strategies. This report focuses on Rutherford High School, where new leadership aims to revamp the team’s performance after consecutive challenging seasons.

This spring marks a significant transformation for the Rutherford Rams under head coach Albert Floyd. Recognizing the need for strategic change following two 2-8 campaigns, Floyd introduced Matt Knauss as the offensive coordinator, drawing from his experience leading North Bay Haven and mentoring quarterbacks at Arnold. Additionally, Javien Elliott, a seasoned professional with ties to Rutherford, Florida State, and the NFL, was appointed as defensive coordinator. Floyd emphasizes an educational approach centered around critical thinking and learning, which he believes will build a solid foundation for the team.

Average participation in spring practices has reached approximately 45 players, including pivotal members who must assume larger roles. Despite losing standout running backs Roman Holmes and Chazton Scott, sophomore Tyshawn Travis and freshman Jemerion Blount are poised to contribute significantly. Floyd notes that competition among players has narrowed the gap between starters and backups, enhancing overall team depth.

Quarterback Jaleel Reed, entering his sophomore year, shows promise as the game becomes more manageable for him. Supported by skilled receivers like Khazion Rochelle, Bray’lyn Hurd, and newcomer Kayden Frank, the offense looks to strengthen its coordination. The Rams will test their progress during their spring game on May 23rd against Franklin County Seahawks and FAMU DRS.

The revamped structure and competitive atmosphere at Rutherford High School signal a promising direction for the Rams. With new coordinators and heightened player engagement, the team appears set to bridge previous gaps and elevate its standing in future competitions.
