The Same Defensive Woes Resurface in UNC's Loss to Alabama
2024-12-05
The UNC basketball team faced yet another challenging defeat as they fell 94 - 79 against Alabama in the Dean Smith Center on Wednesday. This setback followed similar issues that had plagued them in Maui and now resurfaced in their first game back in Chapel Hill. It is the fourth time this season that the Tar Heels have allowed over 90 points in a game, raising concerns about their defensive capabilities.

UNC Basketball's Defensive Woes on Full Display

Renewed Defensive Intensity in the Beginning

North Carolina initially seemed to have a newfound defensive vigor as they forced Alabama to turn the ball over twice in the first two minutes. The Crimson Tide struggled to even reach the rim with their shots in the early stages. However, their offensive efforts failed to capitalize on this defensive stand, with shots not falling and key players like Jalen Washington turning the ball over twice. It was a rough start for both teams, with ugly plays on both sides.

This initial burst of defensive intensity showed potential, but it was short-lived as Alabama's offense settled in and UNC's defensive intensity began to wane.

The early moments set the tone for a game that would see UNC struggle to find their footing on both ends of the court.

Defensive Intensity Fading and Alabama's Lead Growing

As Alabama's offense found its rhythm, UNC's defensive intensity dissipated. The Crimson Tide quickly expanded their lead to double digits and the Tar Heels struggled to find answers on the defensive end. In the first half, Alabama made five of their last seven field goals, increasing their field goal percentage to 36%. The Tar Heels were unable to defend against Alabama's backcourt, with guards Mark Sears and Aden Holloway combining for 23 points. First-year guard Ian Jackson was the lone bright spot for UNC in the period, finishing as the team's leading scorer with 11 points.

The Tar Heels' lack of defensive discipline allowed Alabama to take control of the game and build a significant lead.

This trend continued into the second half, with one play in particular encapsulating the entire game's struggles.

The Downward Spiral in the Second Half

After a missed three-pointer, Alabama found an easy layup through a back door cutter. Just a few seconds later, a careless UNC turnover led to a fast break for the Crimson Tide, which was finished with a floater over Washington. This 9 - 0 run for Alabama ballooned their lead to 14 and the Tar Heels lacked the fight they had shown in previous second halves. Alabama's lead remained in a safe double-digit cushion for much of the final 20 minutes, reaching as high as 18 points.

The Tar Heels seemed to be lacking the mental and physical toughness needed to mount a comeback.

It was a disappointing end to the game, leaving UNC with much work to do as they prepare to open conference play against Georgia Tech on Saturday.
