Santa Anita Selected as New Venue for 2026 LA Olympics Equestrian Events
2025-04-12

Reports indicate that Santa Anita has been chosen to host the equestrian events of the 2026 Los Angeles Olympics, replacing the original site in Temecula. This decision comes after concerns regarding logistical challenges at Galway Downs in Riverside County, such as its distance from Los Angeles and insufficient infrastructure. The new venue, located closer to the city, previously hosted equestrian competitions during the 1984 Olympics. With preparations underway, Santa Anita is expected to accommodate around 200 horses during the event, which will take place from July 14 to 30, 2026.

According to Dressage-News, a Florida-based publication, sources within the Los Angeles organizing committee confirmed the shift in venue last Friday. Originally assigned to Temecula, approximately 70 miles southeast of Santa Anita, the relocation was reportedly driven by practical considerations. These included the significant investment required to upgrade facilities at Galway Downs, along with limited hotel availability and accessibility issues for spectators and participants. No official statements have yet emerged from LA28, the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI), or the Stronach Group’s 1/ST, which manages Santa Anita.

The historical significance of Santa Anita adds an intriguing layer to this decision. In 1984, it successfully hosted Olympic equestrian events, utilizing its main grandstand and temporary seating arrangements around the competition area set up in the middle of the track. Monuments commemorating this achievement still stand near Clocker’s Corner, serving as a reminder of the venue's legacy in sports history.

Looking ahead to 2026, organizers anticipate housing roughly 200 horses in Santa Anita’s stables during the games. Conveniently, the facility’s Thoroughbred racing season concludes in June, allowing ample time for necessary adjustments and ensuring space availability. Races will continue at other locations like Los Alamitos and Del Mar during this period, minimizing disruption to regular operations.

As planning progresses, the selection of Santa Anita promises to enhance the overall experience of the equestrian events. Its proximity to Los Angeles, coupled with established infrastructure, positions it as an ideal location for showcasing these prestigious competitions. While formal announcements remain pending, anticipation builds for what promises to be a memorable chapter in both Olympic and equestrian history.
