Santa Anita Set to Resume Racing Amid Improved Air Quality
2025-01-11

Following a period of uncertainty due to nearby wildfire conditions, racing activities at Santa Anita Park are set to recommence. Track executives announced on Friday that Saturday's races would proceed as planned, provided air quality remains stable. The decision came after the postponement of Friday’s events, which were rescheduled for next Thursday, January 16th. This move was primarily driven by concerns over the unhealthy air quality caused by the Eaton fire and the need to provide time for staff and participants to manage the impact of the disaster in Los Angeles County.

The turnaround in plans was facilitated by significant improvements in air quality. By Friday afternoon, the air quality index (AQI) for Arcadia had dropped to 83, falling within the "moderate" or "acceptable" range according to state guidelines. The California Horse Racing Board mandates that racing should not occur if the AQI exceeds 175. With this improvement, Santa Anita officials feel confident about hosting Saturday’s 11 races, starting at 11:30 a.m., which will showcase the prestigious California Cup program featuring five stakes races for California-bred horses.

Racing enthusiasts have much to look forward to on this important day. In 2024, the Cal Cup attracted 8,073 spectators and generated $11 million in total betting, marking it as the highest-grossing day at Santa Anita in January. Despite the absence of star performers like The Chosen Vron, who won the Don Valpredo Cal Cup Sprint in 2023 and 2024, this year's edition promises thrilling competition. Notable matchups include Big City Lights against Clovisconnection in the $125,000 sprint race, and challenging contests in the three $175,000 races later in the afternoon. The facility, while being vigilant, remains safely outside the fire zone, ensuring the safety of all participants.

Apart from ensuring the event goes smoothly, Santa Anita management has taken proactive measures to support its community. They have distributed N-95 masks and protective eyewear to workers and offered financial assistance to trainers who chose to relocate their horses. These actions underscore the commitment to safety and well-being, reinforcing the positive values of responsibility and care in the face of adversity. As the racing world gathers once again, it symbolizes resilience and unity in overcoming challenges.
