Seattle Mariners' Mitch Haniger's Contract Among Baseball's Worst
2024-12-03
On Monday, a significant ranking was revealed by The Athletic. They took a close look at the 10-worst contracts currently in Major League Baseball. While the Mariners didn't make it onto the specific list, they did receive a passing mention. This highlights the importance of contract management in the world of baseball.
Even Lesser Deals Can Backfire
Just because a deal doesn't get massive publicity doesn't mean it will work out. Take the examples of Jeimer Candelario in Cincinnati and Mitch Haniger. Haniger signed a three-year deal with the Giants before the 2023 season, totaling $43.5 million. But then the Mariners re-acquired him before the 2024 season and will have him for the 2025 season with a remaining $15.5 million. This deal, while not overly burdensome in terms of length or total dollar amount, is having an impact on the Mariners' offseason plans. The Mariners are operating on a strict budget and have only $16-20 million to spend on upgrades this offseason. With Haniger opting into his deal, it has limited their cash flow. They could potentially trade Haniger to free up some money, but it would likely require attaching a solid prospect. Even if they designate him for assignment, they'll still be stuck with that money on the books.Haniger spent five seasons with the Mariners from 2017-2022, making the All-Star team in 2018. However, in 2024, he hit just.208 with 12 homers. This performance has added to the complexity of his contract situation.Continue to follow our Inside the Mariners coverage on social media by liking us on Facebook and by following Teren Kowatsch and Brady Farkas on “X” @Teren_Kowatsch and @wdevradiobrady.
