2025-01-18

The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) women’s tennis team kicked off their 2025 spring season with an impressive victory. On Saturday, the Cougars secured a decisive 7-0 win against Illinois-Springfield at the Edwardsville Y Meyer Center. This dominant performance set a positive tone for the upcoming matches.

The doubles play was a strong start for SIUE. Amelia Gorman and Cydney Rogers showcased their teamwork by defeating Ema Norman Bordean and Niamh Grogan 6-0 in the top doubles match. Following suit, Noelle Compton and Payton Tomichek clinched a hard-fought 7-5 victory over Carmen Llopis Fabra and Kamila Kalinowski in the second doubles slot. The momentum carried through to the singles matches, where all five players—Gorman, Tomichek, Paige Duncan, and Chloe Koons—prevailed in straight sets.

The Cougars are now preparing for a series of away games. Their next challenge will be at Valparaiso on January 26th, followed by matches against Western Kentucky on January 31st and Bradley on February 8th. This early success highlights the team's potential and determination, setting high expectations for the rest of the season. The victories not only reflect the players' skills but also underscore the importance of perseverance and teamwork in achieving excellence.
