Tennessee Football Gains Prominent Transfer Running Back
2025-01-19

On Sunday, the Tennessee football team received a significant boost as Star Thomas, previously from Duke University, pledged his commitment to the Volunteers. The news was first reported by On3’s Hayes Fawcett. Thomas visited Knoxville late last week and decided to join Coach Josh Heupel's squad for his final collegiate season.

Thomas, hailing from Homer, Louisiana, demonstrated remarkable performance during the 2024 season at Duke. He accumulated 871 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on 213 carries. Additionally, he showcased versatility with 20 receptions for 153 yards and one touchdown. His standout game came against North Carolina, where he rushed for 166 yards and a touchdown on 30 carries, also contributing with two catches for 45 yards and another touchdown.

The addition of Thomas addresses a critical need for the Vols following the departure of several key players. With SEC Offensive Player of the Year Dylan Sampson moving to the NFL and reserve running backs Cam Seldon and Khalifa Keith transferring, the team required depth at this position. Thomas joins returning players Peyton Lewis and DeSean Bishop, forming a formidable trio for the upcoming season. Lewis and Bishop contributed significantly last year, with Lewis gaining 339 yards and three touchdowns, while Bishop added 455 yards and three scores. The arrival of Thomas, along with recent recruits Daune Morris and Justin Baker, strengthens Tennessee's backfield considerably.

This strategic move highlights the Vols' proactive approach in enhancing their roster. Thomas is not only a valuable asset due to his impressive statistics but also brings leadership and experience. His commitment underscores the growing appeal of Tennessee under Coach Heupel, attracting top talent from across the nation. As the team prepares for the new season, fans can look forward to an exciting and competitive lineup that promises to elevate the program further.
