2024-11-12
The world of thoroughbred racing has witnessed a captivating display of equine excellence, as the latest TRC Global Rankings Insight sheds light on the remarkable achievements of some of the sport's most celebrated contenders. From record-breaking performances to unexpected triumphs, the rankings have undergone a dynamic shift, reflecting the ever-evolving landscape of this thrilling industry.

Unleashing Dominance: Via Sistina's Unstoppable Rise

The spotlight shines brightly on the remarkable Via Sistina, a six-year-old equine sensation who has captivated the racing world with her unparalleled displays of power and grace. After smashing the course record in the prestigious Cox Plate just two weeks earlier, Via Sistina returned to the track with a dominant performance in the G1 Champions Stakes, cementing her status as a true force to be reckoned with.

Conquering the Champions Stakes

Facing a field laden with G1 winners, Via Sistina effortlessly dismissed the competition, crossing the finish line a commanding 2¾ lengths ahead of her nearest rival, Atishu, ridden by world #2 jockey James McDonald. This latest triumph marks the sixth G1 success of Via Sistina's illustrious career, propelling her to the #2 spot in the Thoroughbred Racing Commentary's Global Rankings, just behind the world leader, Kyprios.

A Transformative Journey

Originally a G1 winner in Europe under the tutelage of former trainer George Boughey, Via Sistina was purchased by Yulong Investments for a staggering 2.7 million guineas at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale. Since then, the remarkable mare has won five of her seven starts, all in the highest grade, under the guidance of renowned trainer Chris Waller.

Overcoming the Pressure

Waller, visibly elated by his charge's triumph, acknowledged the immense pressure of backing up such a dominant performance in the Cox Plate. "Winning the Cox Plate the way she did, I think caught everyone by surprise," he remarked. "And then the pressure to back her up and go one more run – we spoke about sport analogies and having another game after a grand final and we were thinking about it constantly. But she's a very, very special horse, obviously."

A Rising Star: Mr. Brightside

Alongside Via Sistina's remarkable ascent, another Australian-trained contender, Mr. Brightside, has also made significant strides in the rankings, climbing from #18 to #12 after securing his latest G1 success in the Champions Mile on the same card.

A Bittersweet Farewell: Pride of Jenni

The TRC Global Rankings Insight also brought news of a bittersweet farewell, as the reigning Horse of the Year, Pride of Jenni, was retired after bleeding from both nostrils and finishing last in her final race.

Sprinting Sensations: Sunshine in Paris and Bella Nipotina

The excitement continued in the Champions Sprint, where Sunshine in Paris edged out Right to Party in a thrilling photo finish, while the star sprinter Bella Nipotina finished a close third.

Unexpected Triumphs: Knight's Choice and Treasurethe Moment

The rankings update also highlighted some unexpected triumphs, with the shock Melbourne Cup winner Knight's Choice, who had previously won only a minor G3 event, soaring from #1145 to #271. Meanwhile, Crown Oaks heroine Treasurethe Moment has cracked the Top 40, showcasing the unpredictable nature of this captivating sport. As the TRC Global Rankings continue to evolve, the racing world eagerly awaits the next chapter in the ongoing saga of these equine superstars, each vying for their place in the pantheon of thoroughbred greatness.
