Top Horses Show Promise in Kentucky Derby Preparations
2025-02-21

Several promising contenders for the Kentucky Derby have been making headlines with impressive workouts. One of the notable performers is Gaming, a Grade 1 winner trained by Bob Baffert. After an eighth-place finish in the Grade 3 Southwest at Oaklawn on January 25th, Gaming returned to form with a swift five-furlong run in just 59.4 seconds at Santa Anita. This time was the fastest among six horses covering the same distance. Despite his recent setback, Gaming has shown promise with previous victories in his maiden special weight debut and the Del Mar Futurity (Grade 1).

Other hopefuls are also demonstrating their potential through rigorous training sessions. Calling Card, under the guidance of trainer Mike Maker, clocked in at 1 minute and 02.2 seconds over five furlongs at Turfway Park. This performance was the second-fastest out of seven horses working at that distance. Previously, Calling Card placed eighth in the Lecomte (Grade 3) at Fair Grounds. Meanwhile, Grande, trained by Todd Pletcher, breezed four furlongs in 48.3 seconds at Palm Beach Downs, leading the pack among nine horses. Additionally, He’s Not Joking, managed by Josie Carroll, covered five furlongs in 1:00.9 at Palm Meadows, placing fourth out of seven.

The journey to the Kentucky Derby is filled with challenges and opportunities for these young thoroughbreds. Each workout serves as a critical step in preparing these athletes for the ultimate test of speed and stamina. The dedication and hard work put in by trainers and jockeys alike highlight the spirit of competition and the pursuit of excellence in the world of horse racing. As the race approaches, fans and enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the performances of these talented horses, embodying hope and perseverance in every stride.
