Tribe Tennis Narrowly Falls to NJIT
2025-03-17

In a closely contested match, the William & Mary men's tennis team faced off against the formidable NJIT squad. Despite freshman Raz Katz securing a thrilling three-set victory, the Tribe narrowly succumbed to the Highlanders with a final score of 4-1. The match showcased intense competition and highlighted the emerging talent within both teams.

The contest featured several nail-biting encounters, particularly in singles play where four out of six matches extended to three sets. Freshman standout Katz demonstrated resilience by overcoming an initial setback to secure a decisive win in the latter sets. However, despite promising performances from other Tribe players, the Highlanders ultimately edged ahead to claim victory.

Emerging Talent Shines in Singles Play

During the singles portion of the match, freshman Raz Katz emerged as a key player for William & Mary. His impressive three-set triumph at No. 5 singles significantly narrowed the gap against NJIT. After losing the first set, Katz displayed remarkable determination by dominating the subsequent sets with minimal resistance. This victory marked his ninth win of the season and fourth in dual-match play, underscoring his growing influence on the team.

Katz’s performance was emblematic of the Tribe’s overall effort. Four of the six singles matches went the distance, illustrating the competitive nature of the encounter. Alongside Katz, fellow rookies Gur Trakhtenberg and Nikita Bortnichek also showed promise, winning their opening sets. Unfortunately, Nejc Skorjanc’s narrow third-set triumph over Bortnichek secured NJIT’s overall victory. Matches involving Trakhtenberg and Sean Joseph were halted once the outcome became clear, leaving their fates unresolved.

Doubles Action Sets the Tone

In doubles play, William & Mary began strongly with a notable victory on court 2. The pairing of Sean Joseph and Gur Trakhtenberg recorded their fourth consecutive win, defeating Oscar Callo von Platen and Soma Fukuhara convincingly. This early success injected momentum into the Tribe’s campaign. However, NJIT swiftly countered with victories in the remaining doubles matches, establishing a slim lead heading into singles play.

The Highlanders maintained this advantage through consistent straight-set wins at lower positions, solidifying their dominance. Their strategic approach and experienced lineup proved crucial in extending their lead to 3-0 before singles play commenced. Despite these setbacks, the Tribe remained undeterred, showcasing their tenacity throughout the contest. As they prepare for their upcoming match against Longwood, the team will aim to build on the positives drawn from this challenging encounter, focusing on refining their strategies and harnessing the burgeoning talents evident in their roster.
