UCF Knights Bring Back Scott Frost to Replace Gus Malzahn as Head Coach
2024-12-07
Orlando is buzzing with excitement as the architect of UCF's greatest football season in program history is set to return. Scott Frost, a familiar face to UCF fans, will once again take the helm as the Knights' head coach. This move comes after Gus Malzahn's resignation to become Florida State's offensive coordinator. Frost's first stint in Orlando was nothing short of remarkable, capped by the unforgettable 2017 season where the Knights claimed a national championship after a Peach Bowl triumph over Auburn.

Relive the Magic with Scott Frost at UCF

Who is Scott Frost?

For UCF fans, this is a question that demands an answer. Among all the candidates linked to the job, Frost stands out as the most familiar. Currently, he serves as a senior football analyst with the NFL's Los Angeles Rams. Beyond his coaching tenures at UCF and Nebraska, Frost also served as an offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach, and wide receivers coach at Oregon under Chip Kelly from 2009 to 2015. During this time, he mentored Marcus Mariota, who went on to win the Heisman Trophy as the Ducks reached the national championship game. As a player, Frost led Nebraska to a national title in 1997, amassing 1,237 passing yards, 1,095 rushing yards, and 24 total touchdowns. He was honored with Big 12 Newcomer of the Year in 1996 and second-team All-Big 12 honors in his final season. The New York Jets selected Frost in the third round, 67th overall, in the 1998 NFL draft as a safety. He played 59 NFL games over five seasons with the Jets, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Cleveland Browns.

Why did UCF hire Scott Frost?

In a nutshell, UCF is aiming to recapture the magic of Frost's first stint. His staff demonstrated an exceptional ability to recruit top-end talent in Florida and unearth hidden gems. Without the advantage of Power Four football, Frost transformed UCF into the highest-scoring team in the sport with a breakneck pace and the ability to tear defenses apart both on the ground and through the air. However, at Nebraska, Frost's Cornhuskers never surpassed the numbers set in his 2018 debut on the sidelines (30 points, 456.2 yards per game). In April, Frost told CBS Sports that he was "dying to get back" into college coaching. Both he and the Knights have a lot to prove as they strive to belong at the Power Four level. UCF has a 5-13 conference record since joining the Big 12 in 2023. Former players, like recent UCF Athletics Hall of Fame inductee Shaquem Griffin, have voiced their support for rehiring Frost via social media. His return will inject much-needed energy into a program that struggled to a 1-8 finish.
