Uganda Celebrates Ebola-Free Milestone: Last Patients Discharged
2025-02-18

In a significant development, Ugandan health authorities announced on Tuesday the discharge of the final eight patients who had recovered from the Ebola virus. This marks a major victory in the country's efforts to contain the outbreak that was declared last month. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), this milestone reflects the effectiveness of Uganda’s rapid and well-coordinated response. The majority of the patients were treated at Kampala's main referral facility. Notably, there are no other positive cases reported following the recovery of these individuals.

The recent outbreak saw its first casualty in a male nurse who succumbed to the virus just before the official declaration of the outbreak on January 30th. His relatives were subsequently hospitalized with the disease. Controlling the spread of Ebola hinges on tracing contacts meticulously. Health Minister Jane Ruth Aceng revealed that officials documented over 265 contacts, with at least 90 having completed quarantine. During this period, they were closely monitored for any signs of infection.

Innovative measures are being taken to combat the Sudan strain of Ebola, for which there are no approved vaccines yet. Authorities have initiated a clinical trial to evaluate the safety and efficacy of an experimental vaccine as part of their strategy to curb the spread. Historically, the last outbreak in Uganda, starting in September 2022, resulted in at least 55 fatalities over a four-month span.

Ebola spreads through contact with infected bodily fluids or contaminated materials. Common symptoms include fever, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle pain, and sometimes internal and external bleeding. Scientists believe that initial infections occur through contact with infected animals or consumption of their raw meat. First identified in 1976 in South Sudan and Congo, near the Ebola River, the virus has since posed a recurring challenge to global health.

The successful discharge of the last patients signifies a crucial step forward in Uganda’s battle against Ebola. It underscores the importance of swift action and thorough contact tracing in managing outbreaks. With ongoing research into new vaccines, hope remains high for preventing future occurrences of this deadly disease.
