UMBC Clinches Series Victory with Exciting 14-8 Win Over Manhattan
2025-04-27

In a thrilling Sunday doubleheader, the UMBC Baseball team secured a significant series victory by defeating Manhattan 14-8 in the second game. Despite losing the first game 3-1, the Retrievers showcased remarkable resilience and skill, led by Jesiah Carpenter's exceptional performance. Carpenter not only went 4-for-4 but also contributed three RBIs, scored three runs, and executed two stolen bases. This pivotal victory sets up an exciting matchup against NJIT next weekend.

The battle began with Manhattan taking an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. However, UMBC quickly responded as Nolan Kutney launched his first career home run in the second inning, narrowing the gap. Carpenter followed with an RBI single to level the score, while Anthony Mascuilli's sacrifice fly gave UMBC a slim 3-2 advantage. Unfortunately, the Jaspers retaliated swiftly, eventually leading 7-3 heading into the fifth inning.

A turning point occurred when Leewood Molessa's sacrifice fly brought Carpenter home, reducing the deficit to 7-4. The Retrievers then erupted in the sixth inning, scoring seven consecutive runs to secure the lead. Kyle Eddington was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, making it 7-5. Following a tough double play, UMBC powered ahead with six more runs, including Carpenter's crucial two-run single and Mascuilli's subsequent base hit. Danny Orr added two more runs with a double, and Danny Wyatt stretched the lead further with an infield single.

In the seventh inning, Derek Paris delivered a two-run homer, and Orr drove in another run with a grounder, extending the lead to 14-7. Although Manhattan managed to reclaim one run in the eighth, they couldn't close the gap. Sam Bell earned the win in relief, retiring all four batters he faced, while Nick Remy pitched the final three innings for his fourth save of the season.

Looking ahead, UMBC will host second-place NJIT next weekend. In the first game, Danny Wyatt had two singles and scored on Sergio Droz’s sacrifice fly. Manhattan took the lead permanently in the fifth inning with two solo homers. Additional contributions from Derek Paris, Leewood Molessa, and Nick Pratt highlighted UMBC's efforts in that contest.

As the season progresses, the Retrievers demonstrate their determination and capability to overcome challenges, positioning themselves well for upcoming matches. Their dynamic gameplay and strategic prowess promise an engaging encounter against NJIT, eagerly anticipated by fans and players alike.
