The bullet caused extensive damage to his internal organs, including his liver, small intestine, and pancreas. Doctors gave him only a slim chance of survival.The news devastated his family. Matt and Tangi Asiata rushed to the hospital, where they received the grim prognosis. Despite the overwhelming odds, Ephraim’s parents refused to lose hope. They knew their son had the strength to fight back, drawing from the deep well of faith and community support that surrounded them.

A Community Rallies: Prayers and Perseverance

In the days and weeks following the incident, Ephraim’s family and community rallied around him. Friends and extended family members prayed tirelessly, believing in the possibility of a miracle. However, Ephraim felt drawn to BYU for reasons beyond athletics. “Going through everything I’ve been through, it increased my faith and brought me closer to my Heavenly Father,” he explained.At BYU, Ephraim found a new purpose. Though he saw limited playing time due to the depth of the team’s defensive line, his presence on the sidelines was invaluable. Ephraim’s energy and enthusiasm lifted the spirits of his teammates. Coach Kalani Sitake often referred to him as a “walking miracle,” acknowledging the profound impact Ephraim had on the entire program.
