The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) women’s tennis team is set to embark on a crucial six-match conference stretch, beginning with home games against Mercer and Samford. This series will showcase the Spartans' current roster, featuring seven returning players and two new additions, under the guidance of first-year head coach Mat Iandolo. The upcoming matches present an opportunity for UNCG to improve their 3-9 overall record and build momentum as they aim for success in the Southern Conference (SoCon).
On Thursday, March 20, the UNCG Spartans will host the Mercer Bears at 10:00 a.m., followed by a Saturday showdown against the Samford Bulldogs at noon, both taking place at the UNCG Tennis Courts. These encounters are pivotal for the Spartans, who currently hold a 0-1 record in SoCon play.
This week's matchups highlight the competitive nature of the SoCon. The Spartans enter these contests following a strong performance against LIU, where they secured a decisive 6-1 victory. Leading the charge for UNCG are Alexandra Dodashev, Olivia Gallagher, and Elisabeth Birkevold, excelling in singles play, while Dodashev & Gallagher and Sydney Bly & Raegan Mitchell dominate in doubles action.
In contrast, Mercer arrives with a 5-10 record, having recently fallen to Kennesaw State but boasting a solid league presence highlighted by Lea Von Kozierowski and Marie Bannmeyer. Meanwhile, Samford, fresh off their 7-7 campaign, presents another formidable challenge led by Eleni Liakonis and her doubles partner Meredith Taylor.
Historically, UNCG faces tough opponents, with Mercer holding a slight edge in the series at 6-4 and Samford dominating the all-time meetings 10-3. However, the Spartans are determined to turn the tide this season.
After these home games, UNCG continues its SoCon journey with road matches against Chattanooga and Western Carolina later in March. With key players stepping up and Coach Iandolo steering the program forward, the Spartans aim to make a significant impact in the remaining conference schedule, building toward potential tournament success.
