On a remarkable Sunday afternoon at Jimmy Powell Tennis Center, UNCW men’s tennis team emerged victorious against Elon with a 4-2 win. This triumph not only marked their fifth consecutive Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) title but also solidified their dominance as they have now won the finals for four straight seasons. With senior transfer Joseph Wayand playing a pivotal role, UNCW showcased an impressive display of skill and resilience, securing their 11th overall championship under head coach Mait DuBois.
The journey to this victory began with strong performances in doubles matches. Ranked 69th nationally, the Seahawks demonstrated their prowess by winning nine consecutive matches leading up to this final showdown. In the No. 1 doubles match, Jordi Domenech and Wayand achieved a decisive 6-1 win over Veljko Krstic and Oskar Antinheimo. Following closely, Harold Huens and Lukas Steffen clinched the crucial point for UNCW in No. 3 doubles, defeating Charles Pilet and Juan Sengariz 6-3.
In singles play, the competition intensified. Elon tied the match at 1-1 after Jack Curtis' victory over Trey Mallory in No. 4 singles. However, Steffen quickly countered with his 11th win of the season in No. 5 singles, putting UNCW back in the lead. Despite Elon leveling the score through Juan Sengariz's comeback win in No. 6 singles, Sam Nicholson delivered a critical victory in No. 2 singles, giving UNCW a 3-2 advantage.
The climax of the match came when Wayand secured the championship point on court No. 3. Facing off against Oskar Antinheimo, Wayand fought through an intense three-set battle, ultimately prevailing 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. His performance was emblematic of the team's relentless spirit and commitment to excellence.
As the Seahawks celebrate another successful season, all eyes are now set on April 28, where they will learn their opponent for the NCAA Regionals.
