2025-04-12

The Union College women's tennis team achieved a significant milestone by defeating St. Lawrence University with a score of 6-1, maintaining their unbeaten status in the Liberty League. This victory not only marks their fifth consecutive win but also places them atop the conference standings with four matches left. The match took place on Saturday afternoon at the Sammis Tennis Courts in Canton, New York. Notably, this win is Union's first in the North Country since 2001, breaking a streak of twelve straight losses in the region.

Despite an initial setback in doubles play, where Union was swept by St. Lawrence, the team demonstrated resilience and dominance in singles matches. They successfully won all six flights of singles play, showcasing their skill and determination. Junior Sydney Alphabet initiated the singles victories, followed by other standout performances from teammates like Calista Finkelstein, Skylar Semon, Luisa Arizpe-Sierra, Chara Meidani, and Samantha Jacobs. Each player contributed significantly to securing the overall win.

This achievement moves Union to seven matches over .500 for the first time since 1998, highlighting the team's remarkable progress under challenging circumstances. Looking ahead, Union College will face Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in their next match scheduled for Wednesday at 4 p.m. at the Union Tennis Courts.

Although the day began poorly for Union due to setbacks in doubles matches, they quickly rebounded through exceptional singles performances. Sydney Alphabet set the tone early by defeating Ellie Fritz in two sets. Following closely, Calista Finkelstein added another point with her decisive victory against Maya Stepic. The momentum continued as Skylar Semon secured a crucial win over Yvette Karera in the second singles flight.

Luisa Arizpe-Sierra then clinched the pivotal point for Union by outlasting Ellie McDermed in a hard-fought match at the fourth flight. Further reinforcing their dominance, Chara Meidani triumphed over Angelica Aksdal-Jansen in a tightly contested top-flight encounter. Finally, Samantha Jacobs completed the sweep with a thrilling three-set victory against Elisa Iuri in the third singles flight, cementing Union's comprehensive win.

With this impressive showing, the Union College women’s tennis team has positioned themselves strongly within the Liberty League. Their upcoming match against Rensselaer presents another opportunity to extend their winning streak and further solidify their standing in the conference. Fans eagerly anticipate what promises to be another exciting chapter in the team's season.
