Prior to this, he spent four seasons at San Diego State, where he coached under his uncle, Brady Hoke. In 2023, the Aztecs' defensive unit thrived under Hoke’s guidance, recording seven interceptions out of the team's total 11, placing third in the Mountain West Conference. Senior safety Cedarious Barfield ranked third in the league with four interceptions, while the team finished fourth in pass efficiency defense. In 2022, Hoke mentored Patrick McMorris, who earned First Team All-Mountain West honors. McMorris was recognized for his exceptional performance in pass coverage and defensive efficiency. Hoke’s influence was also evident in SDSU’s 2021 campaign, where they led the conference with 17 interceptions, tied for fifth nationally, and ranked 13th in pass efficiency defense. Earlier in his career, Hoke worked at Indiana State, Texas State, and John Carroll University, where he served as defensive coordinator. He also gained valuable experience as a graduate assistant at South Carolina and Western Michigan and as a defensive quality control coach at Army. As a former player, Hoke played for Ball State, appearing in 14 games during their undefeated start in 2008. He graduated in 2012 with a degree in sociology.
